Achievement through Happy Learning

Reception Autumn 2

Class: Reception Year: 2021 - 2022

During this half term we have continued to practise our phonics and writing. We have been very excited to join friends from across Reception in our new phonics groups! We have continued to master our maths skills with Power Maths lessons telling ‘First, Then and Now’ stories and learning about 2D and 3D shapes.

We began the half term by learning about Autumn Festivals, such as Halloween, Bonfire night, Diwali and Christmas. We celebrated Bonfire night with hot chocolate and sparklers, after a visit and safety talk from our local Merseyside Police officer. We learnt about Diwali and made our own Diya lamps. We really enjoyed the story 'Room on the Broom' by Julia Donaldson and retold the story in a variety of ways. The witches moved into our role play corners for a while! We wrote magic spells, made our own magic wands and even made some spooky drinks!

Next we learnt about Spiders. We learnt how useful and helpful Spiders can be. We wrote down the facts that we had learnt and made our very own spider webs and spider biscuits. We met ‘Lucas the Spider’ and heard about the time a giant robot spider walked around the streets of Liverpool!

As this half term comes to a close, children have taken part in their very first Christmas Nativity play. Two performances for families were a magical start to our Christmas celebrations. We have enjoyed many stories and books too, with ‘The Christmas Story’, ‘Stick Man’ and ‘The Night Before Christmas’ amongst our favourites. Children have made their own Christmas cards and decorations to take home and we have enjoyed a Christmas Party, Christmas dinner and even a Santa Dash!
