Science in Action

Lesson: Science

Class: Year 6 Year: 2023 - 2024

Year 6 were given a unique opportunity to visit Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) to learn more about how science is studied. Throughout the day they explored the university campus and took part in a number of science-based activities:

In the lab, children studied reversible and irreversible changes and thought about chemical reactions.  They used a chemical reaction between distilled vinegar and bicarbonate of soda to inflate a glove; observed how dissolved copper sulphate could be recovered from a solution; and they dissolved magnesium in sulphuric acid, observing the changes that occurred. They were true scientists in their protective glasses and lab coats.

In the lecture theatre, children considered the range of careers based upon a scientific background and the attributes required.  This was informative and aspirational for our students.

On the tour, children saw the new medical training site for pharmacists and interacted with the mannequins (each one costing £40,000).  Students asked questions of the patients to assess treatment and saw a control room where the 'patients' are programmed to answer, breathe, have a pulse, cough etc.  This amazing provision has only been open for two weeks!  We then saw the robot dog in action and learned about its ability to scan.  It was a very expensive 'dog' costing £100,000!

Finally, during the Science Show, children were treated to an exhibition based on fire which received plenty of laughs and gasps!

This was amazing opportunity for our children and most left the university aspiring to a job in a science related field! We thank LJMU for welcoming us so warmly.
