Achievement through Happy Learning

Ukraine Fundraiser

In our assembly, we considered the terrible events in Ukraine. This was done in an age-appropriate manner with the focus being on the plight of refugees fleeing war and our role as global citizens. We furthered this understanding during Book Week with Key Stage 1 studying ‘My Name is Not Refugee’ by Kate Milner, and Key Stage 2 studying ‘The Journey’ by Francesca Sanna. In the spirit of this, our children then raised money for the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC). Parents and other family members have kindly 'paid' children to complete jobs around the house; they have washed dishes, made beds, feed the family pet and much more. Sisters Isabelle and Ruby, and Jessica and Kara, also organised raffles which raised a terrifific amount of money. As an incentive, I had volunteered to dress up on, appropriately, April Fool’s Day,  in a 7 foot dinosaur costume which was kindly donated to school by William’s (J8) family! The children had to raise £300 for me to remain as a dinosaur for the entire day and, needless to say, they smashed that target. It has been a pleasure to celebrate children taking a role in our global community and I am proud to dress as a dinosaur (see photographic evidence)!
