Achievement through Happy Learning

Year One - Autumn 2

Lesson: Curriculum

Class: Year 1 Year: 2021 - 2022

During this term, we have enjoyed looking at homes through the ages. We created a homes timeline, comparing artefacts used in the home from then and now and we completed this unit with a fantatsic visit to Walton Hall Gardens. This was our first school trip and we received many compliments about our superb behaviour. All of our teachers and the staff at the hall were very proud of all the children in year one!

In History, we have learnt about the events of 'The Great Fire of London'. We have looked at sources of evidence that help us to understand events that have happened in the past. In particular, we have looked at the diary of Samuel Pepys thinking about the importance of an eye-witness account when finding out about events in the past. We learnt about what a good source of evidence would be when investigating the past. We applied our knowledge of sources of evidence to place pictures of fire fighting equipment used then and now correctly.

In Art, we have used paint and charcoal to create our own 'Fire of London' picture. We first created a background mixing colours of red and yellow to make a fire background. We then looked at silhouettes of houses, churches and other buildings to design our own silhouette image for our own 'Fire of London' picture. We then added the finer details to our buildings and background using charcoal and pastels.

In Science, we have looked at natural and man-made light sources. We have looked at the Sun as being the main natural light source.  We enjoyed exploring reflection, we looked at a range of materials and identified reflective materials and their properties using torches in class.

We have enjoyed exploring celebrations in RE. We have looked at how these are celebrated by Christians such as weddings, baptism, birthdays and Christmas. We have thought about what happens during each celebration and have even re-enacted our own baptism in class.
